Abstract:

It is commonly known that students usually do knot have well developed feeling of exponential growth. Usual approach with plotting exponential function, showing its growth, is often unsuccessful, especially when teachers present examples by themselves. We have developed a series of working materials that are intended to show several situations where we need to have the feeling what exponential growth is. Among this examples are well known stories about the chess inventor's reward, hamster population, etc. Very successful examples (in the view of student's interest in the subject) are also money pyramids, good luck chain letters, spreading of E-mail viruses, ... . With DERIVE or TI-92 we can let students to try simulating all that events by themselves.
